Autism - Facts of Toxicity

Why Autism Can Be So Hard To Cope With

Autism is one of the most puzzling phenomena of the modern age. Even with the constant observation offered by modern medicine, and the high technology research tools which are available to medical practitioners, we are still unsure about many aspects of this disorder. Above all else, we do not have a cure, or indeed any reliable method of treatment. Some autistic patients will, however, recover to lead normal lives, often for reasons which remain as inexplicable as the onset of the condition in the first place. Only one fact is certain, and that is that research will be continuing for a long time to come.

It is also somewhat difficult to quantify exactly what being autistic entails, as it affects people in different ways. The one common feature seems to be a difficulty in social interaction, largely because of altered behavior patterns. This is often characterized by what appears to be a compulsion to carry out the same actions over and over again, even though these actions may be meaningless and irrelevant. Autistic people clearly have a cognizance of the world around them, but it is very different from that experienced by healthy people.

Autistic behavior also affects the ability to communicate, and the diet a patient typically eats. This can be one of the major reasons why autistic patients need supervision, as improved nutrition has been found to be one of the factors which can lessen the symptoms of autism. It is usually possible to make a formal diagnosis very early on in a child's life, usually within the first two or three years, and this can be vital in preparing the best course of treatment. Although autistic children will always have learning difficulties, there is much which can be done.

This early onset of autistic behavior was one of the prime reasons why scientists have always believed that genetics plays a major role. Research is appearing to confirm this, although it is difficult to draw any definite conclusions. Whether the condition is made worse by environmental factors is a controversial issue. Many pollutants have been tested, from diesel fumes to additives in food, and nothing has yet been proven. Some possible exacerbating factors have even been eliminated following comprehensive research.

The great uncertainty concerning autism can make coping with the condition extremely difficult. It is always going to be a shock to discover that your child is autistic, but when you have no coherent information to help you cope with this, the situation becomes greatly magnified. The best advice which can be given is to join a society where you can get the help and support you need, and also to use the wealth of resources found on the Internet. There is some misinformation online, so make sure you get corroboratory information about autism.
